Hyaluronic acid (Viscosupplementation)

The Hyaluronic acid product used within PortPrivate is called Durolane. Dr Campbell is one of only 4 preferred providers of Durolane within Northern Ireland.

Hyaluronic acid is a key component within Synovial fluid, the substance that lubricates healthy joints. It allows cartilage-covered joints to glide more freely against each other while cushioning the joint surfaces during weight-bearing activities.

Durolane https://durolane.com/en/ specifically targets the arthritic part of an affected joint by replenishing the Hyaluronic acid within the joint space. It is licensed for the symptomatic treatment of mild to moderate knee or hip osteoarthritis. In addition, DUROLANE has been approved in the EU for the symptomatic treatment associated with mild to moderate osteoarthritis pain in the ankle, shoulder, elbow, wrist, fingers, and toes.

The injected joint should be rested for 48hrs after the injection with a gradual return to activity after this point.

Pain relief is not immediate and usually begins 2-4 weeks after the injection. In a study of patients with knee osteoarthritis, hyaluronic acid has been proven to provide pain relief and restoration of joint function for up to 6 months. Recent studies however suggest benefits can last as long as 18 months.

Like all injectable materials, the result of hyaluronic acid injections for knee osteoarthritis varies with each patient. Some people experience complete relief, while others receive partial relief or no relief.

Hyaluronic acid injections do not worsen the degree of arthritis within a joint.

There are no known contraindications associated with DUROLANE however, it has not been tested in pregnancy, breast feeding or children. DUROLANE is not made from animal sources of hyaluronic acid so the risk of developing an allergic reaction to DUROLANE is very low. Local reactions, such as pain, slight swelling or warmth immediately after the injections may occur and normally responds very well with applying ice packs. These symptoms generally subside over a few hours and do not tend to cause any problem. Should the pain not settle then please speak to the Doctor.

If the injections are effective they may be repeated after a period of time, usually every 6 months.
